Description

This was a piece where I let all of my desire to paint Traditional Asian (Japanese) cultural elements. Largely using my memory of my favorite ninja game Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven.

*Story wise, the idea is that the ninja with the face mask is in an outdoors courtyard/garden opening the door to her home to assassinate her - The Samurai *at rest. However, she's aware of this and ready with her favorite sword. As you can imagine this piece is big at about 62x64 inches. As you can imagine I had fun doing all the different room accessories as well as her Created from Scratch kimono. [Behind her is a tapestry in the room - not some separate landscape]. Oils on Canvas.

holy cow is this painting a lush painting. I sound weird when i say this, but sometimes there are certain areas in paintings that look so soft and velvety and satiny that i am like oh man my eyes are just gonna sit right there in this spot. I am thinking about that little peek of sky in the background. How did you get it to look so bright and glowing?

Also I love the combination of flat and more built up areas...like her hair versus the hardwood floor. That's really effective. It makes me think this is a realistic scene but then oh wait no some of it is much more 'graphic' in its style . It makes the painting so interesting!!! and it's weird because there is so much depth but the perspective in a way pushes the whole thing forward- it's  flat and deep at the same time!!! So much to look at with your variation : D!
